Bikes are like SUVs

One of the most common reasons I hear in favor of SUVs is that since they sit high you have a better field of vision.

In the last 4 weeks I’ve been taking the first step towards getting rid of one of our two cars. This step was a trial run in not using my car. It has been sitting for just shy of two weeks.

It is now only occasional that I drive my wife’s Toyota Yaris. The other day I was having a really difficult time seeing around a monstrosity of a Nissan Armada. Then a cyclist rode by. It dawned on me their head was a full two feet higher than mine while sitting in the car.

The moral here is that if you are considering buying an SUV so you can see around traffic, then buy a bike instead.

Carrying stuff for every day

I have two bikes I use to go back and forth to work. Therefore I need a bag to carry on my person rather than on the bike.

For years I’ve used messenger type bags. One I had was good most of the time, it is a small timbuk 2 bag. The other is a custom made giant PAC Designs bag. Both bags are awesome, but for my riding they were too small and too big. Plus with a more upright riding position the bulk of the weight is on one shoulder, which can get painful. Messenger bags are made to be worn while you are in a more of a flat back position so this isn’t a problem.

The biggest issue with these two bags was that I kept forgetting items as I switched between bags.

After some research I decided I wanted a backpack that was around 18 liters in size, has a hip belt, sternum strap, rain proof, with only a small amount of internal organization.

One day on my brompton I took the bus after work to my local EMS and searched. I found a north face bag that matched my criteria and fit my long torso.

After using this bag for I week I am happy with my choice. The medium backpack is the way to go.

Background

I live in a medium size town 15 miles outside the small city of Wilmington, DE. I am married with an infant. We own 2 small responsible cars, both are fully paid off.

I work in Wilmington. Typically I take the regional SEPTA train there. It’s a bit over 3 miles each way between home and the train station. At the train station I have rented for free a bike locker. It couldn’t be easier.

I have two bikes I use. One is a Surly LHT. This is outfitted with fenders and a rack. This is my massive hauler.

My second is my favorite. It’s an S type brompton 2 speed.

The first step

For the last 4 years I have flirted off and on with riding my bike to work. I’d go several weeks riding most of the time then stop. Last year was the first time I really considered getting rid of a car. Again I didn’t follow through.

This October was different. I went to my insurance company and garaged my car saving a $1000/year. Now I can’t drive it.

Philly Car Share

I used to work 3 miles from home. In this situation I either road my bike or drove my Honda Fit, allowing me to run errands at lunch and generally be flexible. Our offices have recently moved and I now take the train to Wilmington, DE every day. This has forced me (for better) to plan much better and consolidate errand trips. The problem is that there are still times I need to go out at lunch. For example I needed to go-to the DMV to get my wife’s car title re-printed. They are only open during the day, but with no car to get there I was stuck.

Thats when I noticed the Philly Car Share car at the Wilmington train station. I then signed up for this service. They have two options. One that has no monthly payment, but higher per hour rates or one that has a $15 monthly payment, but lower per hour rates. I signed up for the free account. About a week later I received my electronic key in the mail.

Once I received my key I logged onto the web site. Reserved the car for lunch time. The next day I walked out, opened the car, adjusted the mirrors and I was off on my way. Went to the DMV, then to Wawa, and back to the train station. It was that easy. If they had cars in Newark, DE then I could easily sell one of our family’s cars.

I don’t know what I expected, but as a computer professional I had at least expected this to be more difficult then it was. I strongly recommend this service even if just for the occasional use.

Hats off to Philly Car Share and to the other car share programs out there.
